Accused Murderer Mumtaz Qadri Executed Today

Mumtaz Qadri, the former Elite Force commando was amongst the security personnel designated for late Punjab governor Salman Taseer. His act was quite obvious as he surrendered right after the shooting. His crime was serious enough to sentence him death penalty. His casing was in the courts for quite some years and today he got executed at 4:30 pm.

According to the police, Qadri fired almost 28 times while he was at the duty. The incident took place in the Kohsar Market in Islamabad on 4th of January 2011, when Salman Taseer was exiting from a restaurant. His sentence was announced later in October, 2011. Since, then many appeals have been filed and now, finally he was hanged.

The assassination was behind a strong motive, the opposition of the blasphemy law by the governor. According to the defendant, he killed Salman Taseer with an objective to set an example that opposition of the law is actually the breaking of the law, and it is not allowed in the religion to be alive after committing it.

He also filed the appeal for the mercy to the President of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain, but got rejected. Today his execution was confirmed by the senior police officer Sajjad Gondal as he talked to AFP. He said that the process has been completed in the Adiala Jail, early in the morning. Although, the official of prison confirmed the execution by himself.

There was a reaction after the news, as people was started to gather around his house and the mourning announcements were made from the local mosque. Whilst talking to the media, brother of Mumtaz Qadri told that he is actually proud of the acts of his brother and has no regrets. He also met with him a day before on Sunday. Mumtaz told the bad news that his death penalty is confirmed and next day he was hanged.
